‘As an experienced teacher, I have witnessed first-hand the decline in communication and language skills and the subsequent need to support children’s reading at an early age. Research has shown this is due to several reasons, one of the main factors being that children have had very limited exposure to language and early literacy activities before joining full time education. This lack of one-to-one time to talk is responsible for children failing to enjoy and fall in love with reading. In turn, this has meant that teachers have been left with the task of trying to plug gaps and address barriers before they can start age-appropriate teaching.
